Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better than her stage name, Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's performance in music film and television has earned her the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked the class at Irvington High School. Their divorce occurred at the age of Latifah was ten years old. Latifah attended Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated in her family's Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was given to her her aunt when she was eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" allowed her to be a formidable performer during high school. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah started beatboxing in the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah is one of the first participants of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group made up of DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an example of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
