Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on August 9th, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. In her early years she performed in the New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark.
